Why make the switch to Natural Soap?

Why should you make the switch to natural soap? Have you ever wondered how many showers or baths you have taken in your life thus far? Plenty, right? So that means soap is a huge part of your life, isn’t it? Something you use every day. Now for something that features in your life daily, do you know or care what’s in it?

Here’s a quick run-down on how commercial soap is made: Saponification of fats (animal or plant) is done by addition of an alkaline solution which triggers release of glycerin. Stay with me here. Glycerin is a very important oil that is meant to moisturise the skin but in this process, it is stripped away. Basically all of what’s good for the skin is lost.

Fragrance, additives, coloring agents and preservatives are finally added and the resultant blocks are turned into the bar we get in the shops.

Let’s have a look at some of what goes into your normal store-bought/commercial soap. You will find many chemical-sounding names, some long, some short and some abbreviated. Here are a few of them:

Triclosan

This ingredient has antibacterial and antifungal properties, yes it does. BUT it is actually a pesticide! Triclosan can irritate your eyes, skin and also mess with your hormones…

Fragrance

Strong fragrances or perfume cause migraines and aggravates asthma in some folks.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Also known as SLS. A compound of nitrosamines which can affect the kidneys and respiratory system. It is also known to irritate the eyes and skin.

Parabens

These are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetic & pharmaceutical products. They can cause hormonal dysfunction and have also been linked to breast cancer in women.

These soaps are not only harmful to the skin but also to the environment. The amounts of waste produced that end up polluting our skin, oceans and rivers is astronomical!

So why choose handmade natural soap?

Here is a run down of how handmade soap is made: Saponification of the fat is done (in our case it is vegetable fat only) using a process called the Cold Process which allows retention of all the glycerin and active ingredients (in our case the fruits, herbs, essential oils we use).

Let’s look at why:

Retention of natural oils

Handmade natural/organic soap does not dry out your skin. It instead leaves it moisturised. Moisture is king for healthy skin!

Natural fragrances

The minimal processing in natural soaps most times leaves natural aromas of the ingredients. Of course we can add essential oils (which are plant derived anyways) to add both aroma and benefits. E.g. Lavender, Lemongrass, Tea Tree, Peppermint, etc)

Higher quality

Mass production does not require a lot of care. With handmade soap, care, attention and heart goes into it’s creation ensuring superior quality.

Smaller carbon footprint

The eco-friendly nature of natural soap leaves a smaller carbon footprint. Combine that with eco-friendly packaging and you have a winner.
